Background of the study
This study investigates the effect of educational reforms on Yoruba language teaching methodologies in Lagos, a metropolitan center that has witnessed rapid modernization alongside cultural preservation efforts. Recent reforms in educational policies have redefined teaching practices, incorporating modern pedagogical approaches and digital technologies into the instruction of indigenous languages (Okafor, 2024). In Lagos, where Yoruba remains a key component of cultural identity, reforms have introduced new curricula, teacher training programs, and assessment tools aimed at enhancing language proficiency. The study examines how these reforms have influenced classroom practices, teacher attitudes, and student outcomes. Additionally, it considers the challenges faced by educators in integrating traditional teaching methods with innovative approaches to cater to diverse learning needs (Okafor, 2024). Drawing on theoretical frameworks of educational change and empirical data from interviews, classroom observations, and curriculum reviews, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of how reforms affect Yoruba language pedagogy. The study also explores the tension between preserving cultural authenticity and embracing modern educational trends, highlighting the complexities inherent in reform-driven pedagogical shifts (Adeyemi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the introduction of educational reforms, Yoruba language teaching methodologies in Lagos have encountered several obstacles. The reforms, while progressive, have not fully addressed the challenges of integrating traditional content with modern pedagogical techniques (Okafor, 2024). Inadequate teacher training, limited resource allocation, and resistance to change have led to inconsistencies in classroom practices. These issues have, in turn, affected student performance and the overall quality of Yoruba language instruction. Additionally, the rapid pace of technological integration in education has sometimes overshadowed cultural aspects, further complicating the effective transmission of indigenous knowledge (Adeyemi, 2023). This study seeks to examine these challenges critically and propose strategies to enhance the efficacy of educational reforms in Yoruba language teaching.
Objectives of the study:
To examine the impact of educational reforms on Yoruba language teaching methodologies in Lagos.
To identify challenges in integrating traditional and modern teaching practices.
To propose recommendations for improving language instruction quality.
Research questions:
How have educational reforms affected Yoruba language teaching methodologies?
What challenges hinder effective integration of new teaching approaches?
What strategies can improve Yoruba language instruction in Lagos?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the effects of educational reforms on Yoruba language teaching methodologies in Lagos. The findings will help policymakers, educators, and curriculum developers understand the challenges and benefits of reform-driven changes. By offering practical recommendations, the research aims to enhance teaching quality and preserve cultural heritage within a modern educational framework (Okafor, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of educational reforms on Yoruba language teaching methodologies in Lagos, focusing exclusively on classroom practices and curriculum changes.
